Jessica Matier attended Parsons School of Design. In 2016, she departed from watercolor and collage practices to pursue a mixed-media approach to abstract painting. Her work was in group exhibitions in New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, FSU Museum of the Arts, and The Other Art Fair, Brooklyn. In 2019, Rutgers University acquired the painting Natural Things, which is on display at the Camden Center of the Arts. Matier was born in South Korea in 1985. At three months old, she was adopted and raised in New Jersey. In 2022, she relocated to Kansas City, MO, where she continues to work.

My work straddles abstract expressionism and surrealism. The driving thoughts are surreal as I paint from my subconscious and fill it in with perceptions of my present environment. At the same time, I examine the idea of perception itself. I create images to acquire self-healing wisdom while providing the lessons I've learned. In search of a universal truth, I balance the known with the unknown synonymously within the past and present. I begin my work looking for mirrors of my inner experience through philosophy, religions, and stories. It grounds my thoughts and provides a springboard for new ideas outside known narratives. Piecing together concepts separated by time and culture uncovers eternal realities that help guide me. Initial spurts of automatic painting laid the groundwork for most of my images. The next stage consists of building relationships between abstract forms, placing them in a landscape, or punctuating a thought with a relevant symbol to end the idea, acknowledging that it is not my own. I am connecting the chaos of my inner experience with preexisting accepted universal truths that already exist in the world. Employing mixed media is essential to my studio practice as each medium represents different modes of thinking and expression. I habitually create a movement to symbolize the constant and inevitable changes we face. This eternal looping, or moving through time, creates a precious sentiment, which leads to an eternal truth. The interaction between the terrain and abstract elements is a metaphor for my constant adjustment, assimilation, grief, and hope. My paintings are anthems for struggle, secret desires, and longing to belong. Hieronymus Bosch, Kiki Smith, Louise Bourgeois, Rene Magritte, Thomas Cole, and Bunny Mellon are the primary influences I allow to affect my work.
